FAQ

Here are the answers to some of the more common questions we're asked...

1. How many participants are there typically on a workshop?

We have a maximum of 8 participants per workshop to keep it intimate, to keep the learning concentrated, and to allow plenty of one-on-one tuition with our 2 expert leaders.

2. What sort of camera should I bring?

We recommend bringing a digital SLR with interchangeable lenses. Digital allows us to review the images as we take them in the field and give you valuable feedback at that time, as well as reviewing your images with other participants at the end of each day.

3. I want to buy a new camera - what do you recommend for landscapes?

I own a Canon 5D Mark II. This is a 22 megapixel, full frame camera and the lens I primarily use for landscapes is a 16-35mm F2.8 L series canon. Canon and Nikon make great digital SLR cameras so any of these is good. It's the optics in the lens that count so a fast aperture of at least F4 is recommended.

4. Do I need to bring a tripod?

Yes. A sturdy tripod is a must for long exposures and the techniques we'll teach you during the workshops. A functional tripod should have at least three long leg compartments, allowing it to be raised to almost eye level WITHOUT raising the centre tripod column. If it's made of carbon fibre it will be light and sturdy. I use Manfrotto tripods, something similar to this - http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/cache/off/pid/14793?livid=68|69&idx=71

5. What is a typical day on the workshop?

An early start, usually an hour before sunrise so we can be in position for sunrise at least 30 mins before the light shines on the landscape. A few hours of photography follows, after which we have breakfast. Then lat morning we collect our lunch and go for a full day casual walk with plenty of time to explore and photograph. Sunsets follow then it's time for dinner back at our accommodation. A critique of the day's images follows dinner.

6. How much walking is involved?

We always look to have the walking set at a standard and pace that doesn't exclude anyone. The longest walk on any workshop is about 6kms, and we allow 4+ hours for this so there's plenty of time for photography and to set your own pace if you wish.

7. What is included in the cost of the workshop?

Generally speaking, transfers from the airport, accommodation, all meals, tuition, handouts, freebies (oooh I love giving out the freebies!), national park fees.

8. What is excluded in the cost of the workshop?

Airfares, drinks, and any personal expenses not listed above.

9. Do i need travel & medical insurance?

Yes we definitely recommend this.

10.  I have a partner who would like to come on the workshop - is this possible?

Of course!  Unlike some other workshops, we encourage partners to come on the workshop.  Why wouldn't they want to come when you're travelling to one of the most exotic parts of Australia???  You'll notice on each of the Masterclass Workshop pages we mention the workshop fee for a participant as well as a fee for non-participants - that's partners.  It usually covers food and transfers.  Partners are welcome to join us for walks during the day and sit in on our critique sessions but of course are not tutored in photography during the workshop.

11.  I'm new to photography and want to learn more - what workshops do you recommend I do first?

I recommend our Introduction to Digital Photography Workshop as the first workshop you attend.  This workshop is a one-day workshop held in Melbourne where we teach you how to get the best from your camera. We also teach the basic technical skills around shutter speed, aperture and ISO so you can get the correct exposure.

From there, the sky is the limit.  Get yourself on our 4 day Masterclass Workshop where you'll learn not only from our leaders but the other participants.  You'll learn how to improve your exposures as well as how to best read light and compose images like professionals.

12.   Is this for me? I've never been on a workshop before...

If you love photography, wold love to visit a fantastic location to improve your photography and learn how to take better photographs, want to socialise with other like-minded people and like the idea of learning from some of the best photographers around, then the answer is "YES!"

13. What do I need to bring?

Camera, tripod, gadgets (because all photographers love their gadgets!), Compact Flash Cards, Camera Bag, your laptop computer, Power cable for laptop, Card reader, Hat, sunscreen, Thermals, Walking boots, Clothes (inc warm ones), Rain Jacket, umbrella, Toiletries, Head torch, snacks, anything else that is vitally important that is not on this list…

14. Where do we stay?

We don't believe in roughing it so we choose the best accommodation at each location. Accommodation is included in the cost of the workshop (twin share).

15. Is the accommodation twin share or can I have my own room?

The workshop price is based on twin share however if you would like a room for yourself, please ask otherwise there is generally listed with each workshop a single-suppliment price.
